THE EDITORIAL QUANT
Why Do a Clinical Trial When You Can Just Trade the Results Early?

The SEC's January 2026 enforcement docket reads like a pharmaceutical crime anthology. Three separate insider trading cases, each targeting the life sciences industry, each illustrating a different flavor of the same fundamental problem: clinical trial data is the most valuable nonpublic information in the market, and the people closest to it keep trading on it.

The stock dropped 53%. The avoided losses: $19,680. The penalty: disgorgement of that amount plus a matching civil penalty and a five-year officer/director bar. For context, that's roughly what you'd pay for a used Honda Civic. The SEC brought a federal case over it anyway. See the full breakdown →
